Karen Armstrong's history of the Axial Age, the period around 500 BCE when Buddha, Confucius, Socrates, the Hebrew prophets and the authors of the Upanishads all emerged at the same time on three continents with no contact between them. The book asks why so many of the world's great ethical traditions appeared simultaneously and what they all had in common.

A wide-ranging non-fiction book arguing that universal ethical truths are repeatedly discovered, captured, and corrupted by institutions across finance, education, healthcare, justice, energy, welfare, media, science, and religion. The book traces a single ethical signal - be good, be honest, help others, think for yourself - across three thousand years of human history, and the pattern of every institution that has tried to capture it.
